Project Kitbash - AMIIBO

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to @aneecupcake! :D

This is my first attempt at amiibo customs, so…it’s a little rough.  Combination of inexperience, rushing a little, and too much PVA in the liquid lace, but I feel like Biscuit here turned out pretty well, all things considered.

For the curious, here’s a general idea of where the attachment points on the basic inkling amiibos are – the boy’s arms are also attached separately where his short sleeves end.  The Splatterpro reconfigures pretty neatly into a Splatterscope.  Unfortunately I couldn’t see any way to take the ink tanks apart, so I had to paint over the outside and put a coat of super-gloss over that instead =p

Minimal model magic usage here, just in the front of his tentacles and the scope itself.  Pretty much everything else was layers of liquid lace in varying thicknesses.  Both are sandable when dry, though I think next time I’ll remove both hands and attach those and the weapon separately at the end to make everything else more accessible and easier to detail. Barrel of the charger is a trimmed down toothpick, and the end of it and the center bit of the scope are some beads I had stashed away.

Stitchwerks - Christmas 2016

wanderingkotka:

@setsu-p is the most amazing needlewitch and made me. A. Ruby. Doll. So now there is a far-flung brigade of Objectsona dollies all made by @setsu-p. One day, when reality as we know it is in peril, they will all unite and … uh … well, Ruby will make tea at least. Everything looks better after a cup of tea.

… what, you thought they were going to save the world? Don’t you know how hard that is?

Ruby is an Objecthead / Enchanter, a whole world thought up by @setsu-p. Ruby’s mine, but the rules of play are all @setsu-p’s. More info here. You can see more of @setsu-p‘s plushes here.

… the susuwatari just snuck in from my curio cabinet. Silly dust critter.

One of the two not-yet-shown-off other things I made and sent out back in December.  The body is a pattern of my own, but for Ruby I had to go find a teapot pincushion to make her head.  She was fun to work on even if she did look a little strange headless for a while XD

I’m so glad you like her!

aeraellyth:

Now that @wanderingkotka has shown off her Ruby, I can finally post this little babe.

@setsu-p surprised me with this awesome-possum doll of my objectsona (omg her soft square head! And the ankh and glasses! So cool! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE The fact that you spent time on this lovely for me makes one blush. *head explodes* I’ll have to create little scenes with her, doing her duties and being a pest. :P More Inky info: http://aeraellyth.tumblr.com/post/149674104359/done-by-the-always-awesome-wanderingkotka-i-do She lives in the same area as Ruby and Sim, away from most people. :D *humps screen

aaaand here’s the other one!  Inky’s head was 100% freehand on my part, no pattern – which is why I had to do it at least twice and there was still a ton of needlefelting to be done XD  Her shirt was a blast to paint, though!

YAAAAAY <3

Stitchwerks - Squidmas 2016 Part 2

I didn't customize this one - Andy made her himself.  I think she used to be a Catrine.

Goodies sent off to Cupcake – doll sweater/scarf (my favorite use for old socks tbh) and duct-tape backpack, plushies of Blu Bell and Cece, a little plush mini!Cupcake, and the crowning glory…Parka Pal Boo hand puppet.

Parka Pal Boo was the second biggest experimental thing I tried this year!  I’ve never tried hand puppets before, but this pattern was a blast to work with.  Unfortunately, because I freehanded his tentacles, there wasn’t any room left for actual eyebrows, so in that regard he’s not as accurate to the original art as he could have been :’D

I know I say this about almost every new art hack or technique I find, but learning to make my own fabric paint really did open up a whole new world of possibilities, especially when it comes to these plushies I keep making.

I’m especially pleased with how mini!Cupcake came out.  That’s a pattern from scratch.  She’s designed to be a pleasant fit for the hand and a little floppy, though her clothes hold her up well enough that if you balance her just right she can stand on her own.  Making shoes for her was a failure, so she got painted toes instead =p

Stitchwerks - Squidmas 2016 Part 1

More squids given for squidmas – in this case, Twist and Hype, who belong to @somewhat-nerdy :D  Hype looked so less than impressed with his spiffy bow that I had to get a picture, and it turned out to be the best one I have of these two.

Squid plush pattern for these (and Blu Bell) from Game Guy DIY (I added the long tentacles myself).  Hype’s goggles are modified from this American Girl doll pattern.

Project Kitbash - PUNKIN

 somewhat-nerdy:

We dropped off Mom at the airport today. I am officially without parents and on my own, but it’s been hitting me hard. I was ready to take a nap when I noticed this cutie on my pillow with the banner. SHE’S SO CUTE. @setsu-p made her so she has interchangeable expressions and this was such a nice surprise for me. Thank you so much!!!

This week I kidnapped @somewhat-nerdy‘s punkin (based on her artwork) for a photo shoot =p

She’s a lot more expressive than Sim is (I mean, what with having an actual face, for starters..), though I do wish I could find some alternate hands.  Her base body is a Mirror Beach Maddie – anyone know of decent skin tone matches?  Here again, felt tech is in full effect.  Punkin’s head is a scaled-down version of this pattern, with the striations needle-sculpted in, instead of done with floss as per the instructions.  The leaves and stem were also needlefelted, and the stem is semi-posable since it contains a pipecleaner.

Jeans and tee are both Makies patterns.  Neither fits perfectly; I had to lengthen the legs on the jeans a bit.  The Game Grumps graphic is handpainted.  Plaid shirt is Fashion Doll Stylist again; Ken’s shirt this time.  It’s technically buttonable, though has a tendency to not stay that way =p

The shoes are based on My Froggy Stuff’s dolly sneakers tutorial.  These are ultra-high tops, since I was working around the arched EAH fashion feet.  I’d originally intended to put some heel supports in there for stability and added weight, but they turned out to be unnecessary – the stiffened strips of felt up the back of each shoe do the job just fine.  Punkin stands quite well on her own :)

The belt and (not pictured) knee socks aren’t being used at the moment, though they do exist.  I’m going to have to slap together some casual wear for Sim so I can start replying to all the random pictures of Punkin I keep getting in the appropriate manner XDDD

A Gift or a Curse?

2023 update - this went over extremely well, and is to date probably the best Christmas present I have ever managed to make for someone overall.  Honestly, I'm a little sad about that, but what can you do?

Probably the most complicated, contrived gift I have ever done.  No, it’s not Halloween – this is for Christmas :’D

I’m related to an unrepentant Dark Shadows fan, you see.  There are weekly gatherings to watch the series, which is why I know all about the triumphs and failings of the props department – specifically in this case, regarding the cursed hand of Angelique (that bitch, uuuugh…).  Unfortunately, plastic skeleton hands all seem to come in right only, unless you get an entire body…which I didn’t want or need.  So the gift in this case is the less-cursed right hand of Angelique Bouchard Collins.  With verification from Miskatonic University (couldn’t resist) and a letter from Professor Stokes for good measure.  I may actually have had too much fun with it.  We’ll see how this goes over in a few hours!

it's an el-cheapo art supplies box I lined with felt.

This was originally posted as "Fear & Sewing in Las Vegas".   I, for the record, cannot for the life of me remember what The Pants Incident was :'D

This post has nothing at all to do with Vegas, though I will note I do know someone who lives in the same state =p

Ever come across a sewing pattern and just have this uncontrollable urge to try it out, even though sewing really isn’t your forte and the last time you did try to work from a pattern is referred to as The Pants Incident?  I do.  Did.  All of the above.  When it’s gift time, all bets are off.

The pattern in this case was an MLP:FiM-based one from DeviantART.

(if you use it be sure to read the instructions on the page she links to, with the pattern she adapted this from – otherwise you may get lost beyond lost if you’re a noob like me)

Christmas 2011.  Enter CRIPPLY MCSTARFISH.  Twitter people may or may not remember confusing remarks around that time period involving Cripply.  Well, here’s why I was making them:

my EYES.

Not too bad for a first-ever attempt.  Consider also I’m a cheapskate and printed the pattern out on letter-size paper, which leaves the final product around 12″ tall…in retrospect that thread was all wrong, though.  I used sheet felt for the whole thing, and it stood up to the abuse (resewing about three times, among other things) pretty well.  The legs are wired, too…and she smells a little like a leather jacket.  The eyes and the cutie mark are all cut from wee pieces of felt and glued on (the blue bits colored with fabric marker because I had no blue felt at the time and don’t even know what I was thinking there, tbh, not getting any.  Derp.), and the mane and tail are all cut from felt and sewn.

Other angles are HERE and HERE…some may recognize the Santa hat, a last-minute Q&D addition based on a desire to terrify the recipient :)

This particular pony’s name is Harmony Lily, and she belongs to Eria.

Fast forward to spring, 2012.  Turns out the boss is expecting his first kid.  Enter the pony pattern again, because he’s said it’s a girl and I know all little girls go through that Z0MG HARSES HGHBLGHARGLE phase.

Or at least we used to – nowadays it’s more like ~*HOMG ~WOLVES~ DESU*~, so idk.

THE RETURN OF CRIPPLY MCSTARFISH – and because I remembered to not delete all the photos off my phone, an example of where the nickname came from.

I should redo these someday.  Wee Donkey especially.

Three of them this time.  There would have been four, but I overstepped my bounds trying the Appaloosa, and it became a cat toy instead.  This time the eyes are sewn together/on.  The only things glued are the black one’s sleepy eyelids and his horseshoes (not visible in this picture)  Size and shape adjustments for the ears on the donkey were easy, and the unicorn’s horn is just a triangle shape.  The body fabric this time is fleece, which is more forgiving than felt in some ways, and the manes and tails (and the black one’s fuzzy feathers there) are Lion Brand ‘Homespun’ yarn.  I like Homespun, and discovered by accident when trimming a scarf with it that when it unravels naturally it looks a lot like hair.  Thinking back on it now, if I do this again I’ll have to find some other way to attach that yarn.  It was a BITCH to work with.  Each contains a cedar mothball with a drop of lavender oil on it.

The unicorn probably came out the best, looking at it from an MLP aesthetic point of view, but everyone else is tied, with two votes for the black one and his fuzzy feet, and two votes (and one attempted kidnapping) for the wee donkey.  In retrospect I think the next time I use this one I might combine the pattern parts so the head is attached from the start.  I am not good at attaching heads.  Not at all.

Secretly, Wee Donkey is my favorite too, and has been since I cut his pieces :B

I’m a sucker for punishment, I think we’re all agreed on that.  At least when it comes to some things.  With the workload RCFM has on me this year, I need some backup around to help me cope.  Enter the awesome BabyLondonStar (currently vanished from DA, does anyone know why?), and her plushie patterns.  You can still find some/all of the UFO catcher-style ones cached on Google – and thankfully the tutorial for the ‘sit’ one, which is what I was using, as well.  I think the hardest part of it for me was attaching the feet, to be honest.

Enter the challenge:  translating all nine scruffy, paunchy inches of this guy into a chubby chibi plush that wasn’t meant to be a stitchpunk in the first place.  I am really pleased with the results, y’all.

Yo.
broken image, I know, I'm too lazy to dig him out and redo it in current year.

I’m jazzed about that hat.  It’s made from scraps of one of the ones I dissected in the course of Project Charlie!Hat in 2011.  It’s made in basically the same way as the original, except I had to piece it together so it has a more…rugged look to it.  It’s almost terminally rugged, come to think of it.  That is in fact an authentic piece of a deceased squirrel, there, and the patch is made the same way as the bigger one too.  Extra challenge there since it’s maybe 1/8 the size.  Oosh.

It is now canon that chibi-size Charlie has only two lace hooks.  I guess he grows into the other two as he gets bigger?  In this case they’re paper brads painted over with metallic black paint.  I initially had his eyes glued on in felt scraps, but those totally didn’t work out, so they’re painted on instead.  So is his mouth, though the (invisible in these photos, derp) eyebrows are stitched.  All felt construction this time, too!  I wound up elongating the arms on the pattern since he’s a stitchie, and making the optics from scratch, though I do have pattern parts for those now as well.  It shouldn’t be too hard to alter this one to be more just plain plush and less chibi, but that’s a plan that’ll have to wait for another day.

Chill Pills

This was originally posted as "Not Big Enough?", hence the weird lead-in.  My writing style has obviously changed over the years.  I read as manic even to myself.

FIX IT.  American ingenuity at its…well, if not weirdest, probably one of the stranger examples.  This was a spur-of-the-moment gift for Turq, the guy who hosts rmwerx.  He was brave and awesome enough to install WordPress for me, and so I inquired as to what might make a nice return gift.  He said ibuprofen is always nice to have.  Off I went, in my gratitude, to find the largest bottle possible (without having AARP privileges, anyway).  Wal-Mart disappointed me in the size department, though…  SO I DECIDED THEN AND THERE I SHOULD FIX THIS.

By MAKING the biggest bottle possible.  Or well, the biggest one of which I was capable, anyway.  I’d run across this tutorial a few weeks before, while looking for things to sew for possible cash.  It didn’t look too hard…but then depending on how long and how personally you may have known me, you know I can make things complicated in no time.

It’s a talent.

Well, sewing together a giant plush pill bottle wouldn’t be a problem.  I mean, I had leftover fleece and have been stockpiling felt for months.

what, OH WHAT, will it be??

Except if I was going to have a crapton of ibuprofen in there, it couldn’t exactly be rattling around loose.  Enter Mom, who’d been parading jar-shaped objects before me since I’d asked if we had anything truly huge to measure off of.  The peanut-butter jar worked perfectly!

JIF brand ibuprofen.  Disclaimer:  this is not actually a thing.

That other thing there is the ‘cap’ I made to go over top of the Jif jar’s cap.  The jar sits down inside a little pocket in the big jar.  The bottom of the bottle, and the sides and top/bottom of the ‘cap’ are lined with cardboard to help them keep their shape.

Chill Pills are born.  Deal with it B)

The Post Office assures me it should arrive in its new owner’s arms by next Monday.  I’m betting that a) Turq never runs out of ibuprofen, ever…and b) nobody will steal any because they’ll be far more likely to pick this thing up and hug it XD
